Pinch-Hitting for the coach called away by the war, Martha Jane Ferguson, a physical education teacher of girls at Rolla, MO High School, took over coaching of the school's basketball squad, though she'd never coached before, and led them through a season of 21 victories and four defeats to win a conference crown and a sub-regional title.
