Original Photographs of the University of Dubuque Basketball Team Circa 1918-19

Included in one of the basketball team photos and also in his track and field outfit (last picture in gallery) is Solomon Butler, arguably one of the greatest college athletes of all time. He earned letters in Football, Track&Field, Baseball, and Basketball from 1915-1919. He took first place in many events at the Inter-Allied Games in Paris and became 1 of 3 African-Americans to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1920.

Solomon's other notable accomplishments:

*First African-American to Quarterback a team for four-straight years in college.

*In 1925 he pitched professionally for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League.

*He played Football professionally with Jim Thorpe in 1926 on the Canton Bulldogs.

*He played Basketball professionally with the Chicago All-Stars.

*After retiring from sports he re-opened Jack's Cafe (previously owned by Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Johnson) and appeared in numerous films.
